Day 8 - Quarter Day / by Judson Bartlett

After pounding out miles for a week, we were happy to wake up in Midway, Utah with no immediate deadline to leave. Of course, I had a huge list of things to do. I began the morning by replacing some of the screws that hold the shelf bearings in the van drawers with larger ones. The bearings probably should have been bolted instead of screwed, but I didn’t have the time or inclination to go through that exercise. It’s on the list of things to fix before the next trip.

Meanwhile, Julia, Kellan and Karen went for a sunrise hike. It was chilly (below 50) and they beat the sun to their destination and were back sitting at our campsite table drinking coffee and tea when the sun did eventually arrive.

A happy reunion. Silliness with the camera.

We headed out to celebrate Quarter Day. What is Quarter Day, you ask? Well, we are 1/4 of the way through our trip and today we used tons of quarters at the laundry mat and car wash! We had lunch in Park City at the Bridge Cafe at the base of the Town Lift, where only 6 months ago we had eaten breakfast with Karen’s brother Steve, his wife Lisa and her brother JD before a powder day.

Then we headed out for some additional errands. To Sports Authority for new sneakers for Julia and new sunglasses for Kellan, and to the UPS Store with an armload of junk that I had stuffed into the van before we left that I knew now we wouldn’t need. It will be at home when we arrive.

We spent some of the afternoon at the Summit County library, doing research for our next leg. What an obvious surprise it was to visit the library. We charged every device we have, we did research on campgrounds in Idaho, and the kids spent an hour and a half reading about such things as the Titanic and Weird but True facts.. Since tomorrow is Friday and there will be pressure to get a campsite, we are leaving early in the morning.

Of course, not before a round of s’mores, hacked to become open-face delights thanks to pre-combined graham and chocolate.
