Day 1: Shoving off from the dock. by Judson Bartlett

After a frantic few days of getting the van ready for the trip, I was up before dawn to pack. I sorted through the piles of everything that could potentially go in the van, found space for most of it and then decided it was just too much stuff. I pared it down quite a bit, figuring that anything forgotten could probably be sourced on the road and any smaller unwanted items could be mailed home the first week if it turns out there were duplicates.

Just how much stuff will fit in there?

The kids said goodbyes to their friends at the lake and climbed in the van for a month of solid sibling time and a new adventure with dad and mom. Mom is going to fly out to meet us in Salt Lake City on August 5th. So we took the obligatory pre-departure selfie and left Hague, NY at about 12:30 pm.

Selfies irritate me. But as you can see here, they do serve a purpose.

We traveled in the van for an hour to our first unplanned destination: Hague, NY. Certain necessary items had been forgotten and we had made it just south of the Hague border on Tongue Mountain before realizing that we needed to go back.

Welcome (back) to Hague!

The second departure was more successful and we drove to my parents’ house in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of NY. We enjoyed a home cooked meal, fresh sheets and the gracious and loving attention that only grandparents can provide. Plus, Grandma filled our cooler with goodies from here kitchen and her garden.
